Graphics Round Four – Backgrounds

A key part of any game’s graphics is the background on which all the other assets are displayed.  This is especially true for puzzle games where the background remains mostly in place during gameplay because the user is going to spend a lot of time looking at it, even if it’s just in their peripheral vision.  Because of this, we spent a lot of time creating backgrounds for Grow Your Garden that are detailed and interesting.  Additionally, we needed to make sure that each of the level set backgrounds had a unique feel to keep the game fresh over time.

The easiest way to accomplish this was by using iconic elements of different geographic locations.  For example, here is one of the backgrounds set in a jungle environment:

Good backgrounds take a while to create, but we think they are worth the effort if users enjoy them as much as we do.
